Rodney Workman, Director of Bands
Rodney K. Workman is the Director of Bands at Asheville High School where he conducts the Wind Symphony, Marching Band, Fall Symphonic Winds, 9th Grade Brass and Jazz Ensemble II. He also assists the high school Concert and Symphonic Bands, and all middle school bands in Asheville City Schools. He received degrees in Music Education and Music Performance from Appalachian State University in addition to a Master’s Degree in Music Education from East Carolina University. Prior to coming to Asheville, he taught at Central Davidson Middle and High School. While at Central Davidson his bands received Superior Ratings in Grades II through Grade VI/ Masterworks at the District MPA and performed across the Southeast at local and regional concert band festivals such as the Dixie Classic Festivals, National Adjudicator’s Invitational in Atlanta, Charleston Music Festival, The President's Cup National Concert Band Festival in Washington DC. Since coming to Asheville High, the band had doubled in size and received only Superior ratings in marching and concert band. The Marching Cougars have grown to over 160 members and the Wind Symphony most recently performed at the National Band and Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall in 2024.
In addition to his work at school he has conducted Junior and Senior Bands at UNCG Summer Music Camp and the Cannon Music Camp Symphonic Band at Appalachian State. He has been on staff with the “Carolina Ambassador’s Honor Band” that tours Europe in the summer, and was on staff as low brass coordinator for the 2023 All-American Band that performed for the D-Day Commemoration in Normandy, France. He is a regular guest clinician for All County and All District Bands having conducted more than 50 All County and All District clinics in recent years in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Alabama. He has also served as a guest clinician of the Symphonic Band at the University of South Carolina Band Clinic.
Mr. Workman has been the recipient of the “First Year Teacher of the Year ” award, was selected as the 2011-2012 "Teacher of the Year " at Central Davidson Middle as well as being selected as a finalist for the same award for the Davidson County School System. He was also selected to receive the "Ed Rooker Encore Award" from the American School Band Directors Association. In 2014 he was selected as School Band and Orchestra Magazine's "50 Directors Who Make a Difference" and in the fall of 2018 was featured educator in the Piedmont Triad's "Youth Impact Magazine." In 2024 he was awarded the "Teacher of Excellence" award from the Asheville Rotary Club.
Mr. Workman is active in the North Carolina Bandmasters Association having served as the President of the President. He also served as Northwest District President, NCBA MPA Committee Chair, Honors Band Committee Chair, High School All State and All District Auditions Host, Section Delegate for Band on the NCMEA Board, 9-10 High School All State Clinic Chair, Western District MPA Chair, and the NCBA Honors Band Treasurer. He is also a member of the National Band Association and State Chair for NBA in North Carolina and a member and Region IV Representative of the American School Band Directors Association. He is a brother and was President of the Rho Tau Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.
