Rodney K. Workman, Director of Bands

 

 

Rodney K. Workman serves as the Director of Bands at Asheville High School, where he leads the Wind Symphony, Marching Band, Fall Symphonic Winds, 9th Grade Brass, and Jazz Ensemble II. He also assists with the high school Concert and Symphonic Bands and supports all middle school bands within Asheville City Schools.

 

Mr. Workman holds degrees in Music Education and Music Performance from Appalachian State University, as well as a Master’s Degree in Music Education from East Carolina University. Before joining Asheville High, he taught at Central Davidson Middle and High Schools, where the program grew to over 520 members 6-12th grade and ensembles earned consistent Superior Ratings at District MPA in Grades II through VI/Masterworks and performed widely throughout the Southeast, including at events like the Dixie Classic Festivals, National Adjudicator’s Invitational (Atlanta), Charleston Music Festival, and The President's Cup National Concert Band Festival in Washington, D.C. 

 

Since his arrival at Asheville High, the band program has doubled in size and continues to earn Superior Ratings in both marching and concert band. The Marching Cougars, now boast over 160 members, and the Wind Symphony was recently featured at the 2024 National Band and Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall in addition to being selected to perform at the North Carolina Music Educator's Conference.

 

Beyond his work at Asheville High School, Mr. Workman has conducted Junior and Senior Bands at the UNCG Summer Music Camp and the Cannon Music Camp Symphonic Band at Appalachian State University. He has also served on staff with the Carolina Ambassadors Honor Band, which tours Europe, and was Low Brass Coordinator for the 2023 All-American Band that performed in Normandy, France for the D-Day Commemoration. As a speaker, he has presented at the NCMEA Conference and the Western Carolina University Summer Symposium.

A highly sought-after clinician, Mr. Workman has conducted more than 60 All-County and All-District Honor Bands across North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Alabama. He has also served as guest conductor for the University of South Carolina Band Clinic Symphonic Band and the UNC-Wilmington Honor Band.

 

Mr. Workman has been the recipient of the “First Year Teacher of the Year ” award in Burke County Public Schools while director at East Burke Middle School, was selected as the 2011-2012 "Teacher of the Year " at Central Davidson Middle as well as being selected as a finalist for the same award for the Davidson County School System. He was also selected to receive the "Ed Rooker Encore Award" from the American School Band Directors Association. In 2014 he was selected as School Band and Orchestra Magazine's "50 Directors Who Make a Difference" and in the fall of 2018 was featured educator in the Piedmont Triad's "Youth Impact Magazine." In 2024 he was awarded the "Teacher of Excellence" award from the Asheville Rotary Club. 

 

Mr. Workman is active in the North Carolina Bandmasters Association having served as the President of the President. He also served two terms as Northwest District President, NCBA MPA Committee Chair, Honors Band Committee Chair, High School All State and All District Auditions Host, Section Delegate for Band on the NCMEA Board, 9-10 High School All State Clinic Chair, Western District MPA Chair, and the NCBA Honors Band Treasurer.

 

He is an active member of the National Band Association, currently serving as State Chair for North Carolina. Since being elected in 2012, he has also been a proud member of the American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA), where he has served as both Region IV Representative on the National Executive Board and State Chair for the North Carolina Chapter. Mr. Workman is also a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, where he served as President of the Rho Tau Chapter.
